Objective of the game
The objective of chess is to checkmate the opponent’s king, meaning to prevent it from escaping an attack.
The board and the pieces
The chessboard is a 64-square board (8x8), with alternating light and dark squares.
Each player starts with 16 pieces:
- 1 King 👑 (the most important piece)
- 1 Queen ♛ (the most powerful piece)
- 2 Rooks ♜ (move in straight lines)
- 2 Bishops ♝ (move diagonally)
- 2 Knights ♞ (move in an L-shape)
- 8 Pawns ♙ (move forward, capture diagonally)
How the pieces move
Each piece has a specific way of moving:
- The King 👑 : 1 square in any direction.
- The Queen ♛ : in a straight line or diagonally, as many squares as it wants.
- The Rooks ♜ : in straight lines, horizontally or vertically.
- The Bishops ♝ : diagonally only.
- The Knights ♞ : in an "L" shape (2 squares in one direction + 1 square perpendicular). The only piece that can jump over other pieces.
- The Pawns ♙ : move forward one square (or 2 squares on their first move) but capture diagonally.
Special moves
- Castling : A special move involving the Rook and the King (used to protect the King).
- En passant : If a pawn moves forward 2 squares and passes next to an opposing pawn, the latter can capture it as if it had moved only 1 square.
- Promotion : When a pawn reaches the last rank, it can become a Queen, a Rook, a Bishop, or a Knight.
"Check" and "checkmate"
- Check : The King is under attack and must move or be protected.
- Checkmate : The King is under attack and can no longer escape → Game over, the player who checkmates their opponent wins.
How do you win ?
- Checkmate (the most common).
- Resignation by the opponent.
- Time runs out (in timed games).
👉 The game can also end in a draw in the event of stalemate (no legal moves possible without putting the king in check), repetition of position, or agreement between the players.
